Program Description

Machining is part of the Engineering and Manufacturing Industry, this program develops the fully qualified journey level Machinist who has the ability to manufacture high precision “prototype” parts out of a wide variety of materials, using all types of conventional or Computer Numeric Control (CNC) machine tools; ability to estimate the work and plan the Computer Aided Manufacturing (CAM) processes from the Computer Aided Design (CAD); program the CNC machines, develop holding fixtures, special tools and do own set-ups; work as individual, as a team, or with engineer. Apprentices will also receive Environmental, Health and Safety (ES&H) instruction and training related to the work assignments and tasks to be performed.

Additional Information

  • Must be at least 18 years of age. There is no maximum age.
  • Applicant must have a High School Diploma or GED.
  • Applicant must have good math skills and be familiar with basic shop tools and machines.
  • Applicant must be a U.S. Citizen.
  • Applicant must qualify for high Security Clearance.
  • Applicant must be in good health and physically able to perform all phases of the work.
  • Applicant must be able to read, write and speak the English language in order to comprehend instructions on the job and in the classroom, and to ensure personal and co-worker safety on the job.
  • Applicant must be willing to wear protective clothing and breathing apparatus and work with radioactive and toxic materials and in facilities where these types of materials are used and handled.
  • Applicant must have and maintain a valid drivers license.

Program Length

During the term of apprenticeship, you will work 1000 hours on the job in each of the eight periods (referred to as STEPS) of training in various participating machine shops. In addition to your eight hour per/40 hours per week pay, you will receive 200 hours of straight time pay per year to attend “required” related instruction at a community college during off hours.
